Neisseria lactamica protects against experimental meningococcal infection.

Immunological and epidemiological evidence suggests that the development of natural immunity to meningococcal disease results from colonization of the nasopharynx by commensal Neisseria spp., particularly with N. lactamica. We report here that immunization with N. lactamica killed whole cells, outer membrane vesicles, or outer membrane protein (OMP) pools and protected mice against lethal chall...

Multiple antibiotic resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

The sensitivities of gonococcal isolates to six antibiotics were determined for gonococci isolated in Philadelphia in 1972. The degree of association between susceptibilities to any two antibiotics was determined (coefficient of correlation). The correlation between penicillin and tetracycline (r = 0.75) was almost as good as that between two penicillins, penicillin G and ampicillin (r = 0.85),...

Neisseria lactamica Y92–1009 complete genome sequence

We present the high quality, complete genome assembly of Neisseria lactamica Y92-1009 used to manufacture an outer membrane vesicle (OMV)-based vaccine, and a member of the Neisseria genus. The strain is available on request from the Public Health England Meningococcal Reference Unit. This Gram negative, dipplococcoid bacterium is an organism of worldwide clinical interest because human nasopha...

Two unique restriction endonucleases from Neisseria lactamica.

Two new site-specific endonucleases, N1a III and N1a IV, have been isolated from Neisseria lactamica. N1a III recognizes the sequence, CATG, and cleaves 3' of the sequence to produce a four base 3' extension. N1a IV recognizes the sequence, GGNNCC, and cleaves between the two N's to produce blunt ended fragments.

Neisseria lactamica arthritis and septicemia complicating myeloma.

Neisseria lactamica is a common and normally harmless commensal of the upper respiratory tract found especially in young children. In the July 2006 edition of this journal, Zavascki and colleagues reported the first case of N. lactamica causing cavitatory lung disease in an adult organ transplant recipient (3). The same year, Wang et al. reported a case of N. lactamica bacteremic pneumonia in a...
